Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (around 110°F or 45°C)
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Sauce:
- 1 cup canned tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Toppings:
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional toppings: pepperoni, vegetables (e.g., bell peppers, onions, mushrooms), olives, cooked sausage, fresh basil, etc.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1–2 hours until it doubles in size.
2. Make the Sauce:
- Heat olive oil in a small pan over medium heat. Sauté the garlic until fragrant.
- Add the tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–10 minutes. Set aside to cool.
3. Shape the Dough:
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two balls for two pizzas.
- Roll out each ball on a floured surface into a round shape (about 12 inches in diameter).
4. Assemble the Pizza:
- Transfer the rolled-out dough onto parchment paper for easy handling.
- Spread a thin layer of the prepared sauce over the dough.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly and add your desired toppings.
5. Bake the Pizza:
- Carefully transfer the pizza (with the parchment paper) onto the hot pizza stone or baking sheet.
- Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
6. Serve and Enjoy:
- Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a couple of minutes, and slice it up.
